The Gauteng Provincial Government invites suitably qualified and disciplined individuals to apply for the position of Security Officer within the Corporate Management – Security Management division. This role is essential in ensuring the safety, security, and protection of departmental staff, visitors, assets, and infrastructure.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Grade 10 qualification
  • PSIRA Grade C obtained from a PSIRA-registered or recognised training centre
  • Valid PSIRA registration – Grade C
  • No experience required – ideal for entry-level security officers
  • Knowledge of:

    • Control and movement of equipment and stores
    • Prescribed security procedures (MIS, NISA, Protection of Information Act, etc.)

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Perform Access Control

  • Verify whether visitors have appointments or determine the services they require
  • Contact relevant employees to confirm appointments or guide visitors to appropriate service points
  • Control admission registers and issue visitor cards or control documents
  • Escort visitors when required
  • Operate X-ray machines to detect prohibited or dangerous items such as firearms or knives
  • Use walk-through metal detectors to ensure effective access control

2. Ensure Safety Within Buildings and Premises

  • Conduct regular patrols to check:
    • Doors that must be locked or unlocked
    • Water leaks and open taps
    • Fire hazards and exposed electrical wiring
    • Suspicious objects or packages
    • Lighting (switching lights on/off where required)
  • Apply emergency procedures during incidents such as bomb scares, riots, or fire outbreaks
  • Monitor and respond to alarm systems
  • Immediately report all incidents to the relevant emergency services and departmental management

3. Prevent Unauthorized Removal or Entry of Assets

  • Maintain and complete registers controlling movement of equipment, stores, and documents
  • Ensure departmental assets do not leave or enter the premises without authorization
  • Inspect vehicles entering or exiting the premises
  • Report missing or stolen assets
  • Handle documents according to their security classification

4. Operate Control Room Security Equipment

  • Monitor departmental premises using CCTV systems
  • Ensure all security systems are functional and report faults immediately
  • Record incidents in occurrence books or registers
  • Monitor all access points to ensure compliance with access control procedures
  • Report suspicious conduct and follow up on incidents

5. Lock-Up and Compliance Duties

  • Perform proper lock-ups of offices and access points
  • Identify, record, and report all security breaches and non-compliance issues to the supervisor
